O2 Link claims that the global network construction project commenced in the Philippines.
In December 2022, iFree1 and the O2 Makers Foundation entered into a joint agreement with ArtBi Global in the Philippines to launch the O2 Link. The project began with a pilot program in Manila and Navotas, targeting the Metro Manila area, which has a population of 30 million.
The goal of the project is to install 10,000 Wi-Fi APs by 2024 and reach a daily access rate of 3 million. The City of Manila and the City of Navotas have signed contracts with iFree1 for the provision of mobile content service revenue business and exclusive Wi-Fi services over the next decade, enabling nationwide service.
The project aims to provide communication welfare to the Filipino population of approximately 110 million through the gradual deployment of Wi-Fi services. It also seeks to significantly expand the user base through the airdrop of O2 tokens.
iFree1 and the O2 Makers Foundation anticipate securing over 12 million O2 token users by the end of 2024, with active participation from Filipino users.
iFree1’s efforts in reducing the digital divide between the rich and poor in mobile data are especially significant in light of the average monthly income of Filipinos, which ranges from 200 to 500 USD. The monthly mobile fees they pay represent 5 to 10% of their monthly income, which can be a significant burden.
In Manila City Hall alone, close to 100,000 civil petitioners are received daily, with an average waiting time of 2 hours and 30 minutes. The long waiting phenomenon extends beyond city halls, also occurring in hospitals, subway stations, and universities.
By alleviating the economic burden of data access, iFree1 and the O2 Makers Foundation aim to extend the benefits of the mobile era to Filipinos. They are also committed to expanding the ecosystem of the O2 token to achieve the foundation’s goal of ‘decentralization of mobile data’.
With the establishment of the O2 token ecosystem in the Philippines through collaboration with iFree1, the O2 Makers Foundation is using this success model to rapidly expand to neighboring countries in Southeast Asia.
